I am writing this article to straighten out the mess regarding Ho’oponopono. Ho’oponopono is a powerful, transformative practice which has recently made it’s way from the shrouded Hawaiian shamanistic traditions into popular culture. In that transition, of course, alterations and interpretations have occured – many of which have rendered Ho’oponopono as spiritually impotent as the pop culture in which it now resides. This is the natural adjustment of the original information to better match the level of understanding of the person or people receiving it. And so it has happened with Ho’oponopono.
So, there is a very succinct kernel of transformative essence in the original Ho’oponopono that is it’s secret atomic power, if you will. This nucleus must be kept in tact in order to activate the powerful transpersonal agent that is its’ potential. This nucleus is, in fact, the very same as can be found in numerous other authentic teachings whose objective is the evolution of the human being.
This article is a summarization of the core of Ho’oponopono practice, which is nothing less than your own personal weapon on the cellular level – just waiting for you to put to use. If done properly, it will completely change your life in miraculous ways, and in equally miraculous ways, everything you are in contact with.
This is a 3 part practice that you apply to any and all persons or situations that you want to heal or transform. Choose any and all things that stand between yourself and your own inner peace, and do Ho’oponopono often. Daily. Anything is potential material, be it something that happened a long time ago, something that seems “impossible” to fix, or things that seem rather insignificant and bother you “just a little bit.” As long as it has been in your experience at any point, it is fair game.
Step 1) “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
This needs a little explaining and seems to be the place where most of the mis-understanding has entered into Ho’oponopono. The statement above is spoken silently to yourself and is the recognition that whatever subject you have chosen, it exists within YOUR experience and so you have some role to play in it’s creation. It helps me to close my eyes and imagine the person or situation as if it exists within some sort of personal dream scenario, which in fact, it does. It is a projection of something deep in my unconscious. I own the situation completely with the words in this first step. Yes this is difficult, especially when feeling angry, betrayed, wronged, etc…, but this is precisely the power of this practice. The discomfort of this acceptance is the Ho’oponopono starting to work.
Know that for reasons beyond your current understanding, whatever it is has entered your experience. Believe it or not, knowing why is not necessary. You only need to know that now it is yours. Recognize that inside of yourself is where the healing cauldron is, not outside. So the fact that it is yours is the good news. It can even be a story you hear about on the news. Once something enters your consciousness, it is proper material for Ho’oponopono. So saying, “I’m sorry. Please forgive ME,” is an ultimate statement of personal responsibility. As long as you perceive something as outside of you, happening to you or to someone else from sources somewhere out there, and essentially making you or others into victims, there is no power in the world that can help you. I like to say, “Please forgive me for whatever it is in me that I experience as ________.” (name of person or situation in the blank) What I am focusing on is my own experience of the situation – and that changes everything.
Step 2) “Thank you for this healing opportunity.”
Step 2 is a very natural progression from Step 1. This is a statement of recognition that whatever it is you are choosing to work on, it is in your experience because nature is giving you an opportunity to heal it. Not to punish you or because life just “happens” or sucks. We are grateful because we need to know and see what in ourselves needs healing so we can address it. Remember, this practice is not for the average person who wishes only a comfortable, numb existence. It is for those who are ready to evolve OUT of the karmic wheel. Everything we perceive as shitty needs to be turned around in our thinking to “Ka-ching!” – jackpot time. In otherwords, “Thank you for this opportunity to see what has been in me all along that I don’t want anymore.”
The truth is we carry around tons and tons of interior garbage – from our ancestral lineage, from past lives, from God only knows where. It is amazing the stories and the baggage a seemingly ordinary person has. And it all rotates around inside us on something like etheric conveyor belts, kindly allowing intervals in which to examine what is lurking there as energetic information and keep or discard what we see. If we don’t know how to discard it, the garbage remains on the conveyor belt until it rotates around again sometime, even in a different life time. I talk about this in a slightly different context in the article “Reincarnation and the Great Escape from Time.”
So say “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for this opportunity to release whatever this is in me.”
Again, understand you don’t need to figure out a lot about the situation or analyze too much of what is going on. What you need to know is how you feel about the situation and to zero in on what your experience of it is. Hold this in your attention as you do the practice. This is what is being healed. Do not underestimate how this healing will shift an entire situation.
Step 3) “I release MYSELF to the Great Intelligence of the Universe in Peace.”
Now with this third step, you already have the entire situation within the domain of yourself, and so follows the ability to release it quite simply. So this last step is straight forward. You can replace the words “Great Intelligence of the Universe” with anything that fits your personal beliefs. I like to use the words “Holy Spirit” myself, but I did not grow up with religion so the words Holy Spirit simply conjure the feeling of the divine Spirit of the great unknown. I address the power that keeps all the planets, galaxies, and universes operating and rotating with complete perfection and I know that when I release myself to this, all things will be set right.
While stating in my mind silently this last sentence of the process, I visualize myself being enveloped within large and loving white wings, held in the gentleness and perfection of miraculous creation.
When done properly, you will notice a shift within yourself as you do the process. And then trust that something has changed. Pay attention and watch how situations in the “outer world” clear up ever so naturally (depending on how much clearing you do within yourself), as if you had little or nothing at all to do with anything. Ho’oponopono is the ultimate proof of the oneness of all things.
