The modern calendar is so basic to our lives we rarely think about it, let alone question it. We have been living with essentially the same model of time keeping for so many centuries, we fail to notice the bold absurdity that is right in front of us.

But what if the way we think of time is precisely that which keeps us trapped in time? What if I tell you that society at large is still slave to centuries old paradigms that depend on me and you remaining unconscious, driven by forces we do not understand?

And what if it is time to awake? If our goal is to become more conscious, then we must subject even our most basic perceptions to scrutiny, and that means how we perceive that grand old task master called time.

It’s really quite simple. Our calendar year is basically solar, determined by the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. We wake by the rising of the Sun, and organize our lives by the seasons created by the Earth’s relationship to the Sun. All is good. But it seems we have over looked something.

Maybe it is because we forget to look up. If we did, we would remember that half of our time on Earth is ruled by the elegant and magnetic Moon. Night is the time of quiet on the Earth, the time of receptivity, when the knowing of the subconscious rises to the surface in dreams. Night is the much needed counterpart to the day. It and the moon which is it’s Queen correspond to the female, as opposed to the Sun which is very male.

There are 13 lunar cycles within one solar cycle, each of approximately 28 days. These are the sublime cycles of the feminine held within the larger, more overt cycle that is male. But where did these cycles so intrinsic to our own psyche go in terms of the calendar? And what’s the deal with the 12 months that correspond to…. nothing?  Maybe they should be called the 12 months of wishful thinking.

Don’t be fooled! Just because the Pope who sanctioned it was wearing a dress, do not for a moment think that the calendar we live and die by has anything to do with the feminine.  The 12 month, 365 day calendar is strictly solar, with a dash of cunning fantasy thrown in for good measure. 12 months is a sly simulation of the 13 natural lunar months, and a major power play for male domination. Twelve is so much more manageable than thirteen, just like a woman should be! Twelve is neatly divisible, quiet and agreeable. It is tame, and perhaps foremost, has no connection to the moon, which inspires nothing but lunacy! Thirteen, on the other hand, is purely incorrigible! Nearly demonic! How does one reason with such a number at all! Thirteen is inconsolable, not to mention, PAGAN!  Ban thirteen from everything but the sanitarium!

Think you not the powers that be were so calculating? Think again. The rulers who sanctioned the calendar and threatened penalty for disobeying it were very clear about their intentions of domination and far from naive about who their adversaries were: feminine power and the Pagan religions.

Really, the 13 month way of time keeping is not exclusively Pagan. It cannot be claimed by anyone. It is our human calendar and is given us by virtue of being born on this planet. It is as much ours as the seasons, the sun, and those things which are not ours to choose.

To surrender to the natural calendar, including the lunar AND solar cycles is to surrender to powers much greater than our own. And yet I believe nature yearns for us as much as we yearn for it. It is the magnetism between the lover and the beloved we can resist for only so long.

By incorporating the 13 month calendar we realign Mind, Body, and Spirit with cosmic forces outside ourselves that have direct correlation with cosmic forces inside ourselves. This is the awakening.

Like the feminists in the 60‘s who burned their bras in mass as protest to the Miss. America Pageant, consider burning your 12 month calendar as sacred mass, and a powerful affirmation of the resurrection of the feminine psyche in the world and its’ long awaited reunion with the male psyche. (Both of which exist in each one of us!)

Just how we have limped along as a planet in such a lop-sided, male dominated manner is quite astonishing. And it is all reinforced daily through the unconscious use of the 12-month calendar. I don’t care how many pictures of flowers, faeries, or feminine Gods you decorate it with. If you live exclusively by the 12 month calendar, it will serve to disconnect you from your innate female knowing and all that comes with it.

So celebrate the number 13, throw your head back and look up at the moon, and bask in it’s luminous glory – and get a really good lunar calendar for daily use.*

Today as I write, it is 3.13.13. Coincidence?
